You can identify your competitor’s keywords in a few different places on their website:

Keywords in the Code — Start by checking out their meta tags, such as the title tag or the keywords tag. Typically, the first keyword in a title tag is usually the most important. Use these steps to view the code:

  1. Go to the website, and then right-click the page.
  2. Click View Source. A new window opens with the website’s code.

The <title>tag is near the top of the page. If the site includes it, the meta name=”keywords”tag should be a few lines below. Both of these contain your competitor’s keywords.

Keywords in the Text — Checking out your competitor’s content for keywords also helps you analyze your competition. A keyword density checker (search “keyword density checker” in any search engine) can quickly determine which keywords are prominent in their copy. Or, you can simply use “find” (press CTRL-F on your keyboard) to search for specific keywords.

10 tips for speeding up Outlook

Takeaway: Does Outlook’s pokey performance have you gnashing your teeth with frustration? Try these simple fixes to give it a kick in the pants.

If you’ve used Microsoft Outlook for a while, you know that it can slow down… way down. In fact, when not looked after, Outlook can become nearly useless. Fortunately, there are several things you can do to make Outlook not only usable, but significantly improved. And none of these techniques requires a single configuration change to your Exchange server (IMAP or POP3).

Of course, some of these suggestions might seem to have a bit more “‘duh” factor than others. But you never know what level of skills you’re dealing with, so we’ll cover all the bases. In the end, you should have a much faster Outlook experience.

1: Update Windows

Many people don’t realize that with Windows updates, the updates for Microsoft Office are also “hidden.” But it’s not just the Office updates that can help speed up Outlook. Make sure you allow the updates to happen. Why? There are times when Microsoft might update Exchange. In some cases, those updates can either break or cause problems with the communication between Outlook and Exchange. Or Microsoft might issue a patch to the application to resolve a speed issue or security hole.

2: Download Complete Items

When you connect Microsoft Outlook with either IMAP or POP3, you should have Outlook set up to download the complete message (instead of just the header). If you do this, Outlook won’t have to sync with the server every time you click on a new item (as it will already be in the data file.) How you do this will depend upon which version of Outlook you’re using. But basically, you’re looking for the setting Download Complete Item Including Attachments.

3: Archive your Inbox

I can’t tell you how many times I see clients with thousands upon thousands (and in some cases tens of thousands) of emails in their Inbox. This can cause serious issues, especially when using PST files. Instead of just letting those Inbox folders grow to outrageous proportions, set up auto archiving so that your Inbox retains only a portion of those emails. I like to tell clients to keep the current and previous months’ email in the Inbox and archive everything else. When you archive, you effectively create a new data file, so Outlook doesn’t have to strain against the weight of an oversize PST or OST file

4: Use Cached Exchange Mode

If you use Cached Exchange Mode in Outlook, you effectively take the data file from the server (PST) and cache it on your local machine (OST). This can go a long way toward speeding up your Outlook experience because Outlook doesn’t have to read its data file across a network. Instead, all it has to do is read the locally stored data file. This option (obviously) is available only when connecting Outlook with an Exchange server.

5: Compact your PST File

When the Outlook PST file gets out of hand, a built-in tool can keep the size of that file under control. One of the issues is that even when you delete email from your Inbox, the size of the PST file may remain the same. If you’re using Outlook 2010, you can go to Account Settings | Data Files and select the data file to be compacted. Once you’ve selected the file click Settings | Advanced | Outlook Data File Settings and click Compact Now. Depending on the size of your data file, this process can take some time.

6: Repair your PST File

Scanpst is often my go-to tool when Outlook is acting off kilter. It will scan through your data file and look for data inconsistencies and errors. Here’s the thing about Scanpst — it’s not always the easiest tool to find. Do yourself a favor and search through your C drive to locate the Scanpst.exe file. Make note of its location (usually within the Office installation folder). But be forewarned: This tool can cause PST files to become unusable. Make sure you back up that data file before you start the repair tool. Fortunately, should Scanpst find errors, it will prompt you to make a backup before it attempts to fix the errors.

7: Cut down on the published and shared calendars

Yes, it’s easy to publish and share your calendars with others. The problem is, the more you do it, the more drag you’re putting on Outlook. The more data Outlook has to share and pull down from the Internet, the slower it will perform. Sure, it’s fine to have one or two shared calendars (and even more if you have a lightning-fast data pipe). Just know that the more data you have to push and pull, the slower your connection will be.

8: Disable RSS

By default, Microsoft Outlook will sync RSS feeds from Internet Explorer to the RSS reader in Outlook. If you have a lot of RSS feeds bookmarked in Internet Explorer, that syncing could easily bring Outlook to a crawl. Disable this feature (if you don’t use Outlook as an RSS reader) from within Outlook 2010 by going to Options | Advanced and then unchecking both options under RSS Feeds.

9: Disable add-ins

How many times have you installed some program only to find it installed something else behind your back? This can happen to Outlook as well as Internet Explorer. Sometimes those add-ins can cause major Outlook slowdowns. To find out what add-ins you have installed in Outlook 2010, go to Options | Add-ins. Select COM Add-ins from the drop-down and click the Go button. The resultant window will list all add-ins available to Outlook. Search through this list and uncheck any that might seem suspect.

10: Fix ShoreTel Windows 7 Integration

If you use the ShoreTel Communicator, you might notice some issues when trying to open and use Outlook. The problem lies in an incompatibility issue between ShoreTel and Windows 7. The fix is simple. Open up the Task Manager and look for a process called Agent.exe. Right-click that entry and click Properties |Compatibility. Choose the Run This Program In Compatibility Mode For option and then select Windows XP (Service Pack 3).

Other Tricks?

There’s no reason why anyone should have to struggle with a bogged down Outlook that will have you pulling your hair out strand by strand. These tips should help you enjoy a much speedier and reliable Outlook experience.

GoDaddy Hacked, Millions of Sites Down

GoDaddy.com, the largest domain name registrar on the Web, has been taken offline, and a self-proclaimed member of the Anonymous hacktivism collective is taking responsibility.

The administrators of GoDaddy confirmed on Monday that they were suffering from technical issues, which the website TechCrunch reports to be impacting a multitude of websites and their affiliated email accounts that are hosted through the service. Although the company has not discussed the specifics yet, a self-described member of Anonymous says that he or she is responsible, a claim that has not been verified yet.

On Twitter, user @AnonymousOwn3r writes, “the attack is not coming from Anonymous coletive [sic] , the attack it’s coming only from me” and that the the action is being carried out “to test how the cyber security is safe and for more reasons that i can not talk now.”

GoDaddy has tweeted, “We’re aware of the trouble people are having with our site. We’re working on it.”

On Friday, it was reported that the White House is preparing to roll out an cyber security Executive Order that will serve as a surrogate until Congress can come to agreement on a bipartisan legislation to protect America’s computer infrastructure.

Earlier this year, GoDaddy announced that they would be supporting the Stop Online Piracy Act, or SOPA, a controversial legislation that if approved would have greatly changed the US government’s ability to monitor the Internet. The company eventually reversed their stance, but not before a massive protest resulted in many of their clients switching to other domain registrars. The boycott reportedly ended with thousands of GoDaddy’s millions of customers, including Wikipedia, cancelling their accounts.

Founded in 1997, Arizona-based GoDaddy.com is used by millions of customers worldwide, including a large number of small businesses. At 4 p.m. EST, GoDaddy tweeted, “Update: Still working on it, but we’re making progress. Some service has already been restored. Stick with us.”

Other social media accounts affiliated with Anonymous have not confirmed the validity of the alleged culprit’s claim and have largely distanced themselves from the hack. GoDaddy’s 24-hour tech support telephone line has also been inaccessible during the duration of the outage.

Pros and Cons of Web Hosting for Data Storage

Web hosting for data storage can offer several advantages.

Increased power consumption can also mean increased costs. There’s also the headache of maintenance and technical support; you may have to take on extra staff, or you might find that your current IT staff have less time available for other duties. If your needs vary, with heavier demand at some times than at others, the lack of flexibility can mean waste. Using online storage and third-party servers allows you to save valuable space and leave the maintenance to a dedicated firm’s (hopefully) expert staff. Cloud storage can also help keep costs down because most companies only charge you for what you use in terms of space and bandwidth.

Inevitably your Web-based storage space comes with a price tag—one that gets larger as your needs increase. The more data you store and the more bandwidth you use to upload and download your data from the hosting company’s servers, the more you’ll have to pay. Changes to SSL Certificates Industry Wide

There’s a pretty big change coming for SSL Certificates. And, we think it’s really important to keep you in the loop on these changes.

The biggest change you need to be aware of: if you have an active SSL certificate with an intranet name (e.g.’server1?, ‘mail’, ‘www’, ‘server2.local’, etc.), or a reserved IP address, it’s going to be revoked by October 1, 2016.

Also, on July 1, 2012, customers will no longer be able to purchase, renew, rekey, or manage their SSLs with intranet names or IP addresses that expire past November 1, 2015.

This is an industry-wide decision, not one specific to our company.

Go Daddy Posts Workaround for 60-Day Lock


I just found out from fellow domain blogger Kevin Murphy of DomainIncite that domain registrar Go Daddy has finally posted a workaround to their 60-day lock. Apparently their doing this is a response to the modified ICANN transfer policies taking effect since June 1, 2012.

One of the most common complaints I’ve encountered about domain registrar Go Daddy is their arbitrary 60-day transfer lock. In case you just came in, Go Daddy can prevent your domain name from being transferred to another domain registrar for 60 days if a certain condition is met.

All domain registrars have a rule wherein you can’t move your domain name to another registrar if it’s within its first 60 days of registration or recent transfer-in from elsewhere. Go Daddy is currently the only one who puts in another 60-day transfer lock on top of those.

Initially, Go Daddy’s 60-day transfer lock kicks in if the registrant or administrative contact’s name or contact details is changed. Go Daddy since evolved their 60-day lock to only if the registrant name is changed for whatever reason.

Before I describe the workaround, it might be important to know what ICANN’s recent policy change is, and how this affected Go Daddy.

ICANN mostly made just some language changes in their transfer policy among registrars, but there is one major change relevant to this. Namely:

Upon denying a domain transfer request for any of the following reasons, the Registrar of Record must provide the Registered Name Holder and the potential Gaining Registrar with the reason for denial. The Registrar of Record may deny a domain transfer request only in the following specific instances:

Express objection to the transfer by the authorized Transfer Contact. Objection could take the form of specific request (either by paper or electronic means) by the authorized Transfer Contact to deny a particular transfer request, or a general objection to all transfer requests received by the Registrar, either temporarily or indefinitely. In all cases, the objection must be provided with the express and informed consent of the authorized Transfer Contact on an opt-in basis and upon request by the authorized Transfer Contact, the Registrar must remove the lock or provide a reasonably accessible method for the authorized Transfer Contact to remove the lock within five (5) calendar days.

I bolded the portion starting from “a general objection” to indicate ICANN’s recognizing Go Daddy’s 60-day lock. However, they’re also requiring the registrar to allow the “authorized Transfer Contact” a means to do away with that within five calendar days.

In short, Go Daddy is being allowed to maintain their 60-day thing, yet allow the domain’s registrant or so a way to get around that if ever. The wording can be argued either way, but all this is a means of balancing competing interests.

Domain Name Wire also has more from Go Daddy’s director of policy planning James Bladel:

“We understand our 60 day lock has been controversial,” said James Bladel, Director, Policy Planning for Go Daddy. “What is boils down to is, while it’s a very good tool for intercepting and preventing hijacking…we recognize that our efforts to address that problem shouldn’t be a hindrance to legitimate users of domain names that want transfers to be a little more simple.”

Kevin quotes Bladel’s rationale further:

“The bad guys are not going to call and ask us to take a second look at this,” he said. “The bad guys want it to happen under the radar.”

Bladel explains the lock can be lifted after a human review unless they suspect a hijacking is going on. Additionally, the domain name’s WHOIS information is changed to its original state.

I think that second part is going to pose some problems, particularly on ownership changes after a recent sale. Time will tell how this goes, and Go Daddy is surely going to adjust to that if need be.

So step by step, here’s how it goes:

1. If you change your domain name’s registrant name at Go Daddy, it turns on their 60-day transfer lock. They do post notices of this before you make the change, and they do email about it. (unless caught by your spam filter, knock on wood…)

2. You’ll get an email with an email address to contact a team at Go Daddy to appeal the lock.

I’m sure some of you wish it’s a way to call that team directly instead. Would be nice if Go Daddy accomodates that, though I also know they “need” to control that if ever.

I wish they thought of this sooner rather than have to inconvenience a lot of people unnecessarily because of this, though I know some people want this done away instead. Like I said, it’s a matter of balancing competing interests.

In any case, at least there’s now an option to go around their 60-day lock.

GoDaddy of The Domain Name And Hosting Industry

GoDaddy, probably the world’s largest domain registrar was sold in 2011 for $2.25 billion dollars. This is a hell of a deal. I can not believe that an Internet company would cost that much. Internet is an intangible business and it is really hard to believe that anyone dot-com based company could cost billions.

Does GoDaddy Worth That Much?

It definitely does! It was reported that the company has a portfolio of 48 million domains and 9.3 million customers worldwide. 73% of those domain names are .com TLDs. GoDaddy nets about $2.95 from each .com registration. The average price of the .com domain registered with GoDaddy is $11.99 per year. Some TLD’s like .net and .org cost $14.99 while most of the other popular web addresses are priced between $12.99 and $19.99 per year. If we calculate the annual revenue the company makes form domain registration, it accounts at more than $500 million per year. However GoDaddy is not just a domain registrar. The company sells Shared Hosting services, VPS, dedicated servers as well as email hosting. Among other web services and products in the company’s portfolio are SSL certificates, DNS, Web design and website analeptics as well as SEO services. The Arizona based company has been cash-flow positive since 2001. That year it had $4.3 million in revenue. In 2004 GoDaddy’s revenue rose to $73 million. The next year – 2005 – the company lost $13.8 million on revenues of $139 million, according to its SEC (http://www.sec.gov/) filing. GoDaddy’s spending on marketing has exploded from $1.2 million in 2003 to more that$15 millions in 2005. The company planned to go public in 2005 and planed to raise $200 million through an IPO. However it has in 2006 GoDaddy decided not to attempt an initial public offering. In 2008 GoDaddy reported a revenue of $497.9 million, $750 million in 2009. The domain registrar has steadily grower its business within the last 5 years. It is also believed that the company has a strong sales team. The average online order which customers submit on GoDAddy’s website is $26.81, while the average one posted after a the new customers talked to a customer service representative was $65.00. Domain Name Wire reported that before the deal the GoDaddy’s CEO Bob Parsons “owned 78% of the company and employees owned 22% through stock options”. Mr. Parsons, who has got himself involved in a scandal earlier this year and sparked outrage by releasing a video of himself killing an elephant, will remain with GoDaddy as Executive Chairman of the Board. The company president Warren Adelman is the new CEO.

What Would Happen After The Sale? I do not have an inside information about what the new owners of GoDaddy would do with the company. However I’d project that GoDaddy would probably try to expand aggressively in the web hosting service market. The company would try to grow its portfolio of VPS and Dedicated server customers and to grab larger share in the server market. It could also try to become an important player on the market of Cloud hoisting services. Whatever the new owners decide to do GoDaddy could become even bigger within the next few years.
