Zoom has issued a security advisory warning users of a critical vulnerability affecting several of its Windows-based products. The flaw, identified as CVE-2026-53412, carries a severity rating of 9.8 out of 10 and could potentially allow a remote, unauthenticated attacker to take over user accounts.
According to Zoom, the vulnerability impacts:
- Zoom Workplace for Windows versions earlier than 7.0.0
- Zoom VDI Client for Windows versions prior to 7.0.10, 6.6.15, and 6.5.18
- Zoom Meeting SDK for Windows versions earlier than 7.0.0
The issue was discovered internally by Zoom and has been classified as an improper input validation vulnerability. While the company has not released technical details, it confirmed that a successful exploit could enable account takeover through network access without requiring user authentication.
Zoom Workplace, formerly known simply as Zoom, is widely used by businesses and individuals for video conferencing, chat, VoIP calling, email, calendars, document collaboration, whiteboarding, and AI-powered productivity tools. Given the platform’s broad adoption, organizations should treat this update as a high priority.
Zoom recommends that all users and IT administrators update affected systems to the latest available versions as soon as possible to reduce exposure to potential attacks.
Additional Security Fixes Included
In addition to addressing CVE-2026-53412, Zoom’s latest security release resolves several other high-severity vulnerabilities:
CVE-2026-53410
A time-of-check to time-of-use (TOCTOU) race condition affecting Zoom Workplace, VDI components, Zoom Rooms, and Remote Control for Zoom Contact Center. An authenticated local user could potentially exploit the flaw to gain elevated privileges during software installation or removal.
CVE-2026-53409
An improper privilege management vulnerability impacting Zoom Rooms for Windows. The flaw could allow an authenticated local user to escalate privileges on affected systems.
CVE-2026-53411
An improper input validation vulnerability affecting the Zoom Workplace VDI Plugin for Windows. Successful exploitation could enable privilege escalation by a local authenticated user.
No Active Exploitation Reported
At this time, Zoom has stated that it is not aware of any active attacks leveraging these vulnerabilities. However, given the severity of the account takeover flaw, organizations should not delay applying the latest security updates.
What This Means for Businesses
For organizations that rely on Zoom for daily communication and collaboration, this serves as an important reminder to maintain a regular patching process. Critical vulnerabilities can provide attackers with opportunities to gain unauthorized access to user accounts and business communications. Ensuring Zoom clients, VDI environments, and related components remain up to date is one of the most effective steps organizations can take to strengthen their security posture.
Recommendation: Verify all Windows-based Zoom installations are running the latest supported version and deploy updates across your environment as soon as possible.
